CLINICAL PILATES

for Improved Core Stability, Posture and Health

What is Clinical Pilates?

It is traditional pilates modified by physiotherapist to produce a method of exercise which focuses on building your body's core strength and improving  posture, through a series of low repetition and low impact stretching and strengthening exercises, together with specific breathing control.    Traditional pilates exercises are taught in large groups in many gyms.

By core strength, I am talking about back, abdominal and pelvic muscles. Through clinical pilates, you will be able to develop these muscles, increase your flexibility and agility and at the same time tone your stomach and other muscle groups without adding bulk.

As a Physiotherapist I teach clinical pilates where you will be closely supervised throughout the course, allowing me to monitor any symptoms you have and give you advice and reassurance at that time.

The benefits that are offered in this environment are that classes are carried out on a one to one bases or for small groups of no more than four participants.

These exercises have been designed by Physiotherapists specifically for use in the rehabilitation setting e.g. people with lower back pain.  Exercises are selected to suit your ability and any pre-existing problems you may have.

How does it work?

Pilates focuses on combining slow and precise movement to strengthen core and postural muscles, which in turn improves muscular balance and  posture.  Correct breathing is equally as important, as we need to inhale and exhale with timing and control to target the correct muscles.

It is now recognised that a wide range of conditions from non-specific lower back pain to RSI are often a result of poor postural habits.  Mistreatment of our spines through hours spent sitting in front of a computer or slumped in front of the TV, flattens out the spines natural curves which can cause pain and discomfort.

Core strengthening allows your spine to support the weight of your body and allows it to move with ease and comfort.

Pilates develops more than just your postural and core muscles, it also provides a complete body workout.

Classes

I run courses for beginners, intermediates and advanced participants.

The beginners course includes a ½ hour assessment to ensure that you can benefit from the 6 sessions.  These sessions will be specific to you and any ailments that you may have.

The course is a progressive treatment whereby the difficulty and complexity of the exercises are built on each week, so unfortunately for this reason, places are non-refundable or transferable.

Once you have completed the course you will need to continue with the  exercises to maintain your progress and keep any symptoms under control.  This can be continued at your home or by attending additional classes.
